Songs of today

I was deprived of karaoke the other day. Not that I do it often but at times, I just have the urge to sing and let my heart out. Added to that, it was cold and there was a sudden emptiness inside me. Guess that was the end of summer and hello to autumn.

So, I closed the room door and looked for youtube songs with lyrics.

I’ve been listening much to radio online lately. Naturally, I have been listening to pop songs and everything latest. The oldest songs I listened to dated back to 1998. Think Backstreetboys, N’SYNC, Spice girls, etc. If you know those songs, congrats, you are as old as I am :P

Anyway, back to karaoke and Youtube, I started my search with songs I like, songs that I have been hearing to lately. The search started with songs from Michael Bublé and then Jason Marz. I love songs from both the singers. If you know me well enough, I have always been a listener of oldies. But as mentioned, I have only been listening to the new songs, while working.

I have never noticed or looked at the lyrics…until that very day. I am sure you do know the song “Whistle” from Flo Rida. It is a very catchy song and one of my favourite actually. I use to hum “…whistle baby, whistle baby…”. Little did I know, the lyrics go as below:

Can you blow my whistle baby, whistle baby
Let me know
Girl I’m gonna show you how to do it
And we start real slow
You just put your lips together
And you come real close
Can you blow my whistle baby, whistle baby
Here we go….

Okay, what on earth did I just read? That was so obscene!

Then I thought of the another hit “Call me maybe”.

Hey, I just met you,
And this is crazy,
But here’s my number,
So call me, maybe?

It never really came to my mind but a girl asking a guy to call? Well, it’s 2012! But I am very much more conservative. What happen to those times when girls would wait for guys to approach? Like the phase of being shy, being courted…etc?

Everything became so fast paced and perhaps, thats why relationships ends quicker? Maybe the saying “easy come easy go” makes some sense. Well, that’s another topic.

What about Maroon 5’s “Payphone”. It is also one of my favourite but check this out:

If happy ever after did exist
I would still be holding you like this
All those fairytales are full of sh*t
One more stupid love song I’ll be sick

That is a breakup song (which I wasn’t aware of) but the frustration and the anger are clearly written down. Don’t one love endlessly anymore? Hoping for the best for the other party no matter what happened? Like this?

So I chaffed them and I gaily laughed
To think they could doubt my love
Yet today my love has flown away
I am without my love
Now laughing friends deride
Tears I can not hide
Oh, so I smile and say
When a lovely flame dies
Smoke gets in your eyes

Speaking of breakup and endless love. Here is one of my favourite:

If he brings you happiness
Then i wish you all the best
It’s your happiness that matters most of all
But if he ever breaks your heart
If the teardrops ever start
I’ll be there before the next teardrop falls

Lyrics from Tony Orlando’s hit “Knock Three Times” is always very sweet. At least, girls don’t need to give their number to guys.

Oh my darlin
Knock three times on the ceiling if you want me
Twice on the pipe if the answer is no
Oh my sweetness
Means you’ll meet me in the hallway
Twice on the pipe means you ain’t gonna show

The point is, songs back then were much more meaningful and at least, it keeps the romance as it should be. Don’t you think so?

This is my favourite song of all time. :’)
